Agate is a type of quartz, specifically a cryptocrystalline variety known as chalcedony. It’s best recognized for its unique banded patterns, which form as silica rich fluids deposit layers of differently colored quartz within rock cavities over time.

Rather than being its own mineral, agate is a distinct variety of quartz. Unlike clear quartz with visible crystals, the quartz in agate is extremely fine grained so fine that the crystals are microscopic. This gives agate its characteristic waxy or matte appearance instead of the typical glassy shine of quartz.
